ICSSAR callout summary – 9/12/2024
Injured Hiker
Pocket Rock Climbing area, SR56

We received the call at approximately 18:40  that a hiker had fallen 10-15 feet in the Pocket Rock Climbing area west of Quichipa lake and had injured his ankle.  A member of SAR and an ICSO Sheriff’s Deputy were first on scene at 19:00 and were able to assess the area for entry and made contact with the subject.  The rest of the SAR group arrived on scene at 19:20 hrs and made contact with the subject at 19:30.

It was determined that the subject had a broken ankle and was unable to walk out.  The Gold Cross ambulance was on scene and mobilized the ankle. The team packaged the patient in the stokes basket and transported him out of the area. The subject was loaded into a waiting ambulance shortly after 20:00 hrs and taken to the hospital.  The response team included 14 members of the SAR, 2 members of the high angle team, 1 ICSO Sheriff’s Deputy as well as personnel from Gold Cross Ambulance.  We used two side by sides and 3 trucks.

We are excited to share with the community that we debuted the use of our new Stokes basket wheel tonight.  The Stokes basket is made with titanium so it is considerably lighter than the older basket and it’s configured with a fat tire.  In just one rescue we can see the benefits of this new system.  It was easier for us to hike in with because it’s lighter weight, the patient’s ride was much smoother with the larger wheel, and it was more efficient for the team because the larger wheel cruises over rocks and down steep drops more easily.  You can see the larger wheel in many of the pictures and video.

We wish the patient a speedy recovery and thank our ICSO Deputy for his assistance and the ambulance staff for their onsite medical attention.
Mission was concluded at 21:30 hrs.
