Off SR-14, Cedar Mountain

Male dehydrated and exhausted with a dog.

May 30, 2023

At approximately 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, Iron County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue (ICSSAR) Volunteers responded to an alert of a dehydrated and exhausted male who was hiking with his dog.  He was unable to hike out on his own.  The gentlemen was on a trail located at the top of Cedar Mountain, off SR-14 near the Gypsum Mine. 10 ICSSAR volunteers responded, along with 2 Iron County Sheriff’s Deputies and 1 BLM Park Ranger. We also had the support of the Iron County Sheriff’s Helicopter and Utah Highway Patrol Helicopter.  UHP also brought in a hoist specialist to assist. The team hiked in as far as they could but encountered loose shale that made the climb to the hiker nearly impossibly.  One ICSSAR volunteer and the two sheriffs’ duties made the dangerous attempt, often times climbing on hands and knees and sliding down. They were able to reach the hiker and provide him and his dog with water.  They assisted him to a plateau where the UHP Star 9 helicopter was able to perform a hoist maneuver. The hiker was transported by helicopter back to the asphalt trail on SR-14.  The ICSSAR volunteer and 2 sheriff’s deputies hiked out with the dog. The male hiker and his dog were met by his wife to take him home. The mission concluded at approximately 10:30 P.M. It was a pleasure working in collaboration with the Iron County Sheriff’s Deputies, BLM Park Ranger and UHP.
