Hidden Haven

2 lost hikers

September 19, 2023

Brian Head, Utah

At 2:45 P.M. on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, the Iron County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue (ICSSAR) volunteers and ropes team were paged to respond to a report of two hikers who had lost the trail in Hidden Haven and were on a steep incline near a cliff.

One adult male, and one adult female hiker started at the hidden Haven trail system. They hiked up to a high elevation and came off trail onto a steep cliff. They found themselves unable to hike back out.  The Southern Utah University (SUU) Aviation helicopter conducted a fly over of the area with one our Iron County Sheriff’s Deputy Liaisons.  They were able to locate the stranded hikers and landed a short distance away. The Iron County Deputy and Pilot were able to make contact with the stranded hikers as the Department of Public Safety (DPS) helicopter arrived on scene with a hoist. The DPS helicopter hoisted both the male and female down to the trailhead without any reported injuries.  We had 9 Iron County Search and Rescue volunteers, 1 SAR K9, 4 members of the Iron County Ropes team, 4 Iron County Sheriffs Office personnel, 1 Forest Service Ranger, as well as the DPS helicopter and SUU helicopter.

The mission concluded at 5:15pm.

We are thankful for the incredible interagency collaboration and communication.
