Red Hollow Trailhead

Injured Hiker

April 11, 2024

At 6:00 pm, the ICSSAR team received a page to respond for an injured hiker on the red hollow trail.  The team arrived at the trailhead (TH) at approximately 6:30pm and began the ascent up to the injured hiker.  3 members of Gold Cross Ambulance were already on scene and able to provide medical attention and stabilize the injured ankle.  Once the patient was stabilized, we were able to secure her in a stokes basket.  Given some of the very steep terrain, we used a method called caterpillar to safely mauver her down.  This requires us to pre-stage volunteers ahead of the stokes basket. Then we pass the basket down through volunteers in the steep area.  There was a total of 13 SAR team volunteers, 3 Iron County Sheriff’s Deputies and 3 Gold Cross Ambulance Staff.  The patient was transferred into the ambulance at the TH and transported to the hospital.  The mission concluded at approximately 720pm.

We wish the patient a speedy recovery!
