Graff Point Fire
Shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, SAR was put on standby to help with evacuations due to the Graff Point fire which had started the night before on July 12. SAR received the callout at 10:26 a.m. and deployed to a staging area at approx. 11:00 a.m. to the Northwest of the fire off just off old highway 91. The SAR group was split into two teams and directed to travel to the upper and lower basin roads. An evacuation area was put in place and the teams made their way through this area directing anyone they came in contact with to evacuate the area.
The evacuations continued until approx. 04:30 p.m. when it was decided to bring the SAR teams back. There were 19 members of the Iron County SAR who responded as well as 4 liaisons, several of the Iron County Sheriff Deputies including the Iron County Sheriff. The team deployed 7 trucks and 4 trailers, 4 ATV’s and 1 drone during the event. Members of the BLM, Forest Service, and DNR were also involved with the evacuations. The mission was concluded at 06:30 p.m.
