On 02/13/2025 at 09:20 p.m., SAR was called to assist motorists stuck in the snow in the Meadow Lake area South of State highway 143, East of Cedar Breaks. It had been snowing that evening and the easiest access was through Brian Head. The roads were snow covered which made the trip difficult up the canyon.

An Iron County Sheriff’s Deputy was first up the canyon and relayed that bringing trucks with trailers up the canyon may not be feasible. This is due to the road conditions, especially at the “S” turn. The deputy informed that he would continue on to see if he could reach the stranded subjects and notify if it appeared the other vehicles could proceed. One SAR truck and trailer with snowmobiles was able to make it to Brian Head. The rest decided to wait below the “S” turn. The ICSO deputy was able to reach the vehicle and accessed that he could help get the vehicle back on the road.

The driver told the deputy they were from Nevada and that they were trying to get to Duck Creek by following directions on Google maps. The directions indicated they needed to go through the Meadow Lake area to reach highway 14. He counseled the occupants that they needed to be more careful about winter driving conditions. Also to be more aware of roads and road conditions in the higher elevations, especially when winter weather was in progress.

The deputy followed the vehicle down the canyon, and the occupants decided to go back to Cedar to spend the night. The rest of the SAR members waited until the subjects and deputy were headed down the canyon before proceeding back to Cedar City.

All members of SAR, the Sheriff’s deputy and subjects made it back to Cedar safely and the call was closed at 12:30 a.m. The team for this event included 6 members of the SAR snow team plus the Iron County Sheriff’s Deputy as well as 3 trucks and trailers hauling 4 snowmobiles, a side X side with tracks and a snowcat.

The Iron County Search & Rescue would like to remind all once again to please be very cautious when driving in higher elevations during the winter months. It is also advisable to double check your route during this time, especially when using navigation devices as they often will want to send you on a route that is the “easiest”, which during a snowstorm or winter conditions may not be the case.
