February 16-17, 2024

The ICSSAR team got together for our annual winter training this past weekend.  The weekend kicked off on Friday night where a handful of members arrived at the UDOT Shed off SR14 at 3pm where they put to use their winter survival skills and shelter construction to camp overnight outdoors in the frigid temps.  There are times that a rescue could carry overnight if the weather conditions prevent the rescuers from being able to safely return to Incident Command. Rescuers need to know how to keep themselves and potentially injured persons safe and warm overnight.

Saturday was a full training day that kicked off at 830am with training on using beacons, probes, and the Sked stretcher in winter conditions. The Sked stretcher is a plastic litter that provides protection for the patient while allowing extrication through various types of terrain and conditions.   The middle of the day provided an opportunity for the volunteers to apply their skills in a scenario where they had to locate an injured person, package them appropriately and then transport them to a waiting ambulance.  We also had an overview/refresher of helicopter safety.

It’s a family friendly training, so many of the volunteers brought their families to enjoy some time in the high country.  They were able to play injured persons for us and sled in the snow.   Finally, a HUGE shout out to a couple of the paramedic students from Southwest Technical College that also attended our trainings as guests.

Thank you to the volunteers who took pictures and videos!
